FAQ: Database Development
For Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) not related to Database Development, Internet Presence, and Consulting and Support, please refer to our General FAQ Page.
1. What is a database and why do I need it?
A computerized database system that lets you store and organize information you use in your business. It’s different from a spreadsheet in that you can view, sort, and print millions of records of data faster. Databases can also share a single set of information to different people in your organization. Each person accessing the database can have a different username and password so they can only see the information you allow them to.
2. What database platform do you use?
We use FileMaker Pro to develop custom database solutions for the following reasons:
• Ease of use. From installation to maintenance, FileMaker lets us deploy solutions faster than other platforms. Even our customers can make changes to their solutions once we have everything up and running.
• Compatibility. FileMaker Pro runs both on Mac OS X and Windows XP/Vista/7 computers. You can import data from other databases with popular file formats such as Excel, DBF, and CSV. Reports can be saved as PDF files and quickly emailed to your staff and/or customers.
• Expandability. Using FileMaker Server, up to 1,000 people can access your database simultaneously. If your organization has other database systems, FileMaker can communicate with them thru ODBC (Open Data Base Connectivity).
For more information, please visit the FileMaker Pro website.
3. Do I need to purchase a license for FileMaker Pro? Where can I purchase it?
Yes. Our services only include the development of the solution that will run under FileMaker Pro, which is the database engine. This can be compared to purchasing a license for Microsoft Excel if you wish to work on a spreadsheet that another person has made: Microsoft Excel is the “engine”, and the XLS or XLW file is the “solution”.
If your business is located in the Philippines, you can purchase FileMaker Pro licenses from Ynzal Marketing Corporation, the local distributor for FileMaker.
Outside the Philippines, you can purchase FileMaker Pro licenses from the FileMaker Pro Online Store.
